We finally got it back, 15 business days after filing. We had to call the IRS helpline to ask about it, and they told us it was scheduled to be deposited the next day. I think it's some kind of scam, hoping people won't follow up on their refunds, forget about it, and let some pasty bureaucrat cash in.

Feh! You're lucky. I work at a bank and have to deal with people constantly calling and asking about their refunds. As far as I can tell, on average they're taking a couple days less than they would if people got the paper checks. And a really big freaking PFFFT to people who yell at bank staff about pay checks/tax refunds. WE DON'T GENERATE YOUR REFUND/PAYCHECK!!!! Grrr...Sorry just had to get that off my chest.
